Q&A: Implementing a Strategic Plan

Q&A: Implementing a Strategic Plan

How can we best implement our strategic plan?

Implementation planning can turn your strategic plan into an action plan and help create a culture of shared accountability for plan success.

You can support implementation by:

  • Ensuring you have measurable objectives for each goal: If your plan doesn't already include objectives for each broader, bigger-picture goal, develop clear objectives that identify specific and measurable outcomes.

  • Creating shorter-term action plans for your goals and objectives: Translate your plan's goals and objectives into concrete, achievable actions that your team can implement. Detail the projects, programs, initiatives, and changes needed to achieve each goal and objective.

  • Encouraging units to develop plans: In larger organizations, your departments, divisions, and teams may also want to create plans. Using your organizational plan as the foundation, they can develop goals, objectives, and actions specific to their team.

  • Creating alignment with budgets and approvals: Incorporate plan goals into budget requests and project approval processes to clarify the connections between budget items and new projects or programs.

  • Continue communicating about your plan: Regularly document and broadly share your progress toward achieving plan goals and objectives. Invite your community and team into the story of your plan and the progress you are making!

The impact of your strategic plan shouldn't end with the final draft. Create a culture of shared responsibility and accountability for achieving plan goals with implementation planning!
